Environment
Working with Base and local officials, NEX stores participate in programs including recycling of cardboard/corrugated/paper, beverage containers, used crankcase oil, antifreeze, tires, batteries, metals, and safe storage and disposable of hazardous wastes as well as mitigation of spills or leaks if they occur. NEX Stores' energy efficiency improvement efforts include replacing lighting with new more efficient bulbs and fixtures, installing more efficient air conditioning equipment, vending machines, and other equipment. NEX shoppers are encouraged to purchase our new reusable shopping bags, which reduce the need for plastic bags and their subsequent disposal. In Navy Lodges you will find energy efficient light bulbs and fixtures, energy management of heating and air conditioning equipment in rooms, motion-detector light switches in public restrooms and storage rooms, and flow restricted shower heads and faucets. Guests are encouraged to participate in our “Good Earthkeeping” program by reusing towels and linens more than once, saving energy and chemical use, reducing waste. The Navy is a leader in the use of alternative fuels, including ethanol and biodiesel, and operates the largest fleet of vehicles using alternative fuels in the state. In support of this effort, three NEX gas stations now offer E85 flex-fuel, including NEX Oceana, Va., NEX Quarters K, Va., and NEX Crane, Ind. E85 pumps on Navy installations are available for use by federal, state and local governments, NEX patrons and the general public. NEX Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is doing its part to protect the environment and conserve water by featuring xeriscape landscaping in its parking lot. The project involved the installation of nearly 59,000 drought-tolerant plants in nearly 96,000 square feet of beds. Through this project, NS Pearl Harbor is hoping to save about 462,000 gallons of water per month or about 5,420,000 gallons per year. In dollar terms, that's a savings of over $10,000 per year.
